SEO vs. Social Media
Jumping into a Twitter "convo" and finding verification

How does search engine optimization (SEO) deliver in light of the "predominance" of social media? The questioner is one of the new breed of media consultants (sometimes called social media consultants) who sees social media as the be-all, end-all for creating the best online customer experience. To our way of thinking it's another tool in our quiver to deliver what the user wants.... but first, they have to find you!

One of the basic principles of search is that "people are eager to find you".

Yes, they really are. Over 80% of the search traffic across the web is for research (products, services, news and relationships). So it goes without saying that many of the billions of searches made every day might have you in mind.  The question was raised during a discussion that was cared out completely using Twitter. It got really interesting as one of our group from New Jersey quickly countered the idea that Social Media is king because social media is in a constant state of controlled chaos with few tools that allow people to monitor progress and results from their SoMe efforts.  He also aptly pointed out the time investment for an effective social media presence is far more onerous for a small business than investing in a modest search marketing or SEO campaign.

Rick Smith of Sommerset, New Jersey said "Anything you do for search engine marketing, do for search engine optimization.... Effective conversion pages are always first". And he want on to say that "I'd rather pay for good copy than a Facebook page".

So let's break that down a bit. First, search engines don't pay a lot of attention to social media and social media can create chaos in people's attempts to utilize search engines to do research that could lead them to you! Second, your website provides you with a way to maximize your visibility across the web in a controlled, effective and manageable way. It is your foundation for everything else.

Rick went on to say, "if I only had budget to do one, I would always choose SEO over social media".

The reason that is the best pick is let's help people find you for whatever purpose you need them to find you for, then introduce them to your social media tools in the context that you want them to be used. In this way your visitors will see what you're about in a clean and controlled environment before they engage using Facebook, Google + or Twitter.
